MFA Press Statement: Appointment of Singapore's High Commissioner to the Republic of Papua New Guinea

The Government has appointed Mr Chelva Retnam Rajah as Singapore's High Commissioner to the Republic of Papua New Guinea. He will be resident in Singapore.

Mr Rajah is currently a Partner in the Singapore law firm of Tan Rajah & Cheah and a member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration. He is also an Independent Director of two companies listed on the Stock Exchange of Singapore, namely, UOB-Kay Hian Holdings Ltd and Overseas Union Enterprise Ltd. He is also a Director of Cathay Organisation Pte Ltd and Camelot Trust Pte Ltd, a Board Member of Mercy Relief Ltd and a Member of the Legal Commission, Singapore Red Cross. He was President of the Law Society of Singapore from 1990 to 1992, a Judicial Commissioner of the High Court of Singapore from 1 July 1995 to 30 June 1997 and appointed a Senior Counsel on 10 January 1998. He has also served as Chairman of Singapore National Committee, ASEAN Law Association from 2005 to 2006.

Mr Rajah is married to Ms Sim Lye Choo. They have two children.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY

Mr Chelva Retnam Rajah is currently a Partner in the Singapore law firm of Tan Rajah & Cheah.

Mr Rajah was born on 3 November 1948 in Singapore. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Jurisprudence from Lincoln College, Oxford University in 1970.

Mr Rajah is currently a member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration. He was President of the Law Society of Singapore from 1990 to 1992, a Judicial Commissioner of the High Court of Singapore from 1 July 1995 to 30 June 1997 and appointed a Senior Counsel on 10 January 1998. He has also served as Chairman of Singapore National Committee, ASEAN Law Association from 2005 to 2006. He is also an Independent Director of two companies listed on the Stock Exchange of Singapore, namely, UOB-Kay Hian Holdings Ltd. and Overseas Union Enterprise Ltd.
