MFA Press Statement: First Meeting of the India-Singapore Joint Ministerial Committee (JMC), New Delhi, India, 22 April 2008

Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo will lead a delegation to the inaugural meeting of the India-Singapore Joint Ministerial Committee (JMC) on 22 April 2008 in New Delhi, India. Singapore and India agreed to set up the JMC in June 2007 to take stock of bilateral initiatives, exchange views on regional and international issues, as well as to identify new areas for cooperation. The JMC will be held annually and the venue alternates between India and Singapore.

The inaugural meeting of the India-Singapore JMC will be co-chaired by Minister Yeo and his Indian counterpart, Minister of External Affairs Pranab Mukherjee. The delegation from Singapore will include senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Trade and Industry. Both countries are expected to comprehensively review bilateral cooperation between Singapore and India including areas such as education, economic, defence and culture.

During the visit, Minister Yeo is also scheduled to meet Minister of Human Resource Development Arjun Singh, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Murli Deora and members of the Indian Parliament. After attending the JMC, Minister will visit the state of Madhya Pradesh and is scheduled to call on Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
