MFA Press Statement: Visit by Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo to India: Meeting with Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, 12 November 2007

Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo met Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee in New Dehli on 12 November 2007. During the meeting, the Ministers reaffirmed the strong and growing relations between Singapore and India, and discussed ways to forge even closer and more enduring cooperation between the two countries. They also discussed the upcoming East Asia Summit in Singapore in November 2007, and exchanged views on how ASEAN and India could further deepen their cooperation to enhance stability and prosperity in the region.

The Ministers also reviewed the current situation in Myanmar, including UNSG Special Advisor Mr Ibrahim Gambari's recent visit to Myanmar from 3-8 November 2007. The Ministers noted the progress made thus far, in particular, the positive statement that Mr Gambari had read out on behalf of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. Both Ministers affirmed the need for a genuine dialogue between the Government and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and the importance of ASEAN, China, Japan and India working together to help the people of Myanmar in national reconciliation. Both Ministers reaffirmed their continuing support to Special Advisor Gambari.

Minister Yeo returns to Singapore tonight.
