MFA Press Statement: Appointment Of Singapore’s Ambassador To The Argentine Republic

The Government has appointed Mr Ow Chio Kiat as Singapore's next Ambassador to the Argentine Republic. He will be resident in Singapore.

Mr Ow is currently the Executive Chairman of Stamford Land Corporation Ltd, Singapore Shipping Corporation Limited and Cougar Logistics Corporation Ltd. He is a member of the Singapore Australia Business Alliance Forum. He also serves as Council Adviser to the Singapore Institute of International Affairs, and is Singapore's representative to the ASEAN Free Trade Area-Closer Economic Relations Business Council and Bremen Business International.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY

Mr Ow Chio Kiat is currently the Executive Chairman of Stamford Land Corporation Ltd, Singapore Shipping Corporation Limited and Cougar Logistics Corporation Ltd.

Mr Ow was born on 28 March 1945 in Singapore. He started his career in Hai Sun Hup, which was a cargo handling/port services company. He expanded this into an international multi-faceted shipping and property group. Eventually, Hai Sun Hup Group Ltd was listed on the main board of the Singapore Stock Exchange in 1989 and subsequently renamed Stamford Land Corporation in 2001 to focus on its core hotel and property businesses. Mr Ow established two other listed companies, viz Singapore Shipping Corporation in 2001 and Cougar Logistics Corporation in 2006.

Mr Ow is a qualified Chartered Shipbroker. He is a member of the Singapore Australia Business Alliance Forum. In addition, he serves as Council Adviser to the Singapore Institute of International Affairs, and is Singapore's representative to the ASEAN Free Trade Area-Closer Economic Relations Business Council and Bremen Business International.

Mr Ow was bestowed the Order of Bernando O'Higgins with the rank of "Gran Oficial" by the President of Chile in 2000. He was also awarded the President's Medal by the Singapore Australian Business Council in 1999 to recognize his achievements and contribution to the Singapore Australia business relationship. The IMCA and University of Action Learning conferred the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) honoris causa to Mr Ow in Edinburgh, Scotland in 2002. Mr Ow was the Honorary Consul-General of the Slovak Republic to Singapore from June 2001 to May 2007.

Mr Ow is married to Mrs Katherine Ow and they have two children.
