US Secretary of Defence Robert Gates, who is in Singapore to attend the 6th International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Asia Security Conference (ASC), called on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Istana on 2 June 2007. Secretary Gates and Mr Lee exchanged views on bilateral defence cooperation and security developments in the region and the Middle East. Secretary Gates also expressed appreciation for Singapore's contributions to the reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan. He called on Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew the same day.
