MFA Press Statement: Singapore's contribution to the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN)

The UN Security Council on 23 January 2007 unanimously adopted Resolution 1740 (2007) to establish UNMIN for one year. UNMIN was formed to help oversee the Comprehensive Peace Agreement between the Nepalese Government and the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist). UNMIN's mandate includes monitoring the management of arms under the ceasefire agreement, providing technical support for the election of a Constituent Assembly, deploying electoral monitors and reporting on the conduct of the elections.

Singapore will deploy two military officers as part of UNMIN. The SAF officers, MAJ Ong Chuan Hian and MAJ Siva Balan Subramanyam, leave for Nepal on 11 May and will be deployed in the arms monitoring component.

Our contribution to the UN Mission in Nepal is part of Singapore's continuing efforts to support UN peacekeeping and humanitarian missions within our abilities. To date, Singapore has contributed a total of some 1,500 SAF and 400 SPF personnel to more than 10 UN peacekeeping missions, including the ongoing UN Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT).
