Foreign Minister George Yeo called on former German Chancellor, Dr Helmut Schmidt, and First Mayor of Hamburg Ole von Beust on 13 March 2007. Minister Yeo was in Hamburg to deliver a keynote speech at the OAV Liebesmahl (annual dinner of the German Asia-Pacific Business Association).
During his call on Dr Schmidt, they had an interesting exchange of views on key developments taking place in Asia, Europe and the Middle East. At the meeting with Mr von Beust, both sides noted that Singapore and Hamburg shared many similarities as port cities and had much to learn from each other's experiences in dealing with the challenges posed by globalisation. Minister Yeo also welcomed the proposed visit of Mr von Beust to Singapore in May 2007.
