MFA Spokesman’s Comments on Bilateral Negotiations on Singapore-Indonesia Extradition Treaty

In response to press queries on remarks by Indonesian Extradition Treaty Chief Negotiator Arif Havas Oegroseno on the Extradition Treaty negotiations, as reported in The Jakarta Post (6 February 2007), the MFA Spokesman said:

"I am a little puzzled. There has indeed been progress in the negotiations on an Extradition Treaty but some difficult issues still need to be settled. Furthermore, as agreed to between Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono during the Leaders' Retreat in Bali in October 2005, Singapore and Indonesia are negotiating the Extradition Treaty and the Defence Cooperation Agreement in parallel. One cannot be concluded without the other."
