MFA Press Statement: Call on Kazakhstan Leaders by Foreign Minister George Yeo, 2 June 2006

Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo, who is on an official visit to Kazakhstan, called on HE Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in Astana. They reaffirmed the excellent bilateral relations and agreed that Singapore and Kazakhstan should continue to deepen and broaden the areas of cooperation.

Minister Yeo also had a fruitful exchange of views with his countepart, Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Kassymzhomart Tokaev, who hosted a dinner in honour of Minister Yeo. In addition, Minister Yeo met several other leaders including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Budget Planning Dr Karim Massimov, Speaker of the Majilis (Lower House of Parliament) Ural Mukhamedzhanov and Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Baktykozha Izmukhambetov.

During an earlier stop-over in Almaty, Minister Yeo had a lunch meeting with Mayor Imangali Tasmagambetov and discussed ways to expand bilateral cooperation. Minister Yeo also met business leaders as well as Singaporeans working and living in Kazakhstan. Minister Yeo encouraged the Singaporeans in Kazakhstan to continue to make positive contributions and stay connected to Singapore.
