MFA Press Statement: 4th Asean Charter Eminent Persons Group Meeting

DPM S Jayakumar as Singapore representative to the ASEAN Charter Eminent Persons' Group (EPG) will host the Fourth Meeting of the EPG from 27-29 June 2006 at the Shangri-La Hotel. The meeting will continue to discuss recommendations on the directions and nature of the ASEAN Charter.

The 10-member EPG, chaired by Malaysian representative Tun Musa Hitam will consult with civil society and business representatives at a session hosted by the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. The EPG will also be hosted to a lunch by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and a dinner by Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo.

The EPG has been tasked by ASEAN Leaders to make recommendations on an ASEAN Charter to strengthen ASEAN integration and provide a bold vision on the future direction of the grouping. The EPG, which has been meeting regularly, is expected to finalise and present its report to ASEAN Leaders in December 2006 during the 12th ASEAN Summit.
