MFA SPOKESMAN'S COMMENTS ON THE VISIT OF SECRETARY OF STATE MADELEINE K ALBRIGHT TO SINGAPORE, 29-30 JULY 1997

1 United States Secretary of State Madeleine K Albright''s visit to Singapore has deepened the strong bilateral ties enjoyed by the two countries. It has also reinforced the close cooperation on economic, political and security issues at the regional and international level.

2 Secretary Albright called on Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong and Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew. They discussed a wide range of international issues and agreed that both countries will continue to cooperate closely.

3 Earlier, Secretary Albright met with Minister for Foreign Affairs Prof S Jayakumar and reviewed the recently concluded ASEAN Regional Forum and the ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conference. They expressed satisfaction at the outcome of these meetings, including the substantive discussions on subjects like ASEAN expansion, ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organisation (KEDO), Cambodia, and Myanmar.

4 Both sides agreed that bilateral relations were strong and multi-faceted. They reaffirmed their commitment to continue working closely on issues of mutual interest.
