Embassy of the Republic of Singapore - Yangon

Taxi Advisory [26 September 2016]

There have been several cases recently reported by foreigners visiting Yangon of offences by taxi drivers including mugging and sexual offences.  Although Myanmar is still a safe country to travel in, you may wish to take the following security measures when taking a taxi:

    a)    Do not share the taxi with other unknown passengers. Check the back of             taxis with open trunks to see that no one is hiding there;

    b)    Do not use taxis without proper taxi registration. Use only those with red             licence plates or blue licence plates (for tourist use only and through             booking);

    c)     Sit directly behind the driver so that he cannot have direct eye contact or             reach behind to you. Do not sit next to the driver. Sitting behind will also             allow you to run out from either doors.  If you feel something is wrong,             stop the taxi and get out of the vehicle in a crowded area;

    d)    Note the taxi licence plate number when you board it, in case you need to             make a police report e.g. you left something in the vehicle or you were             robbed;

    e)    Try not to take a taxi alone especially at night or if you have been drinking.             Get a friend to send you home or use a reliable taxi driver.

2       There are now several reliable taxi operators which you can use in Yangon:

    a)    Hello Cabs Facebook    https://www.facebook.com/hellocabsmyanmar/

    b)    Oway Ride Facebook   https://www.facebook.com/owayride/?fref=ts

    c)    Grab Taxis

    d)    Uber

    e)     The Flying Swallow Transport company offers airport to city transfers.  The             transport service at the airport taxi counter uses registered “tourism”             vehicles with blue licence plates. Their price is reasonable and service is             reliable.
