Joint Stamp Issue and Musical Performance by Singapore Wind Symphony

The Singapore Wind Symphony (SWS) and Thailand’s Silpakorn University, with the support of the Embassy of the Republic of Singapore, staged a joint musical performance at the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 21 September 2015.  At the event, the Singapore-Thailand joint stamp issue was also launched.  Thai Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs Norachit Sinhaseni hosted the event.  The event was the grand finale in a series of events organised by the Singapore Embassy this year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Thailand.

The musicians from SWS and Silpakorn University performed a medley of songs, including “The Royal Celebrations Fantasy Overture” composed by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Singapore songs like “Singapura” and “Home”.  SWS also showcased Singapore’s multi-ethnic and multi-cultural diversity through their musicians and musical instruments, which included Erhu and Tabla (Indian drums played by a Chinese Singaporean). There was also a Thai cultural performance by the Thai Ministry of Culture’s Bunditpatanasilp Institute.  Some photos from the Embassy’s photo exhibition Thais Remember Singapore were displayed at Thai MFA, including the two photos taken by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn during her visits to Singapore.  Desserts featured on the joint stamps – Thai mango sticky rice and Singapore’s ice cream sandwich – were served at the event, along with Singaporean favourites like chicken rice, laksa, and bak kut teh.

We would like to thank Thai MFA for hosting the event, and our guests for celebrating 50 years of friendship between Singapore and Thailand with us!

Singapore 50: Gift of Books to the National Library of Thailand

Ambassador Chua Siew San presented 300 books on Singapore and/or by Singapore authors to the National Library of Thailand on 16 September 2015. The books were presented on behalf of the National Library Board of Singapore and the Embassy of the Republic of Singapore as part of the “Singapore 50: Gift of Books” project, to commemorate Singapore’s Golden Jubilee and the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Thailand.

The books were presented to Ms Kanok-on Sakdadate, Director of the National Library of Thailand, and were prominently displayed at the ASEAN Corner of the library. These books have been specially selected to showcase various aspects of Singapore’s art and culture, as well as our history in nation building in the past 50 years.

The “Singapore 50: Gift of Books” project is part of the Embassy’s year-long celebration of the close friendship between Singapore and Thailand. The Embassy will be extending the gift of books to other libraries in Thailand as well.
