MFA Spokesman's Comments in response to media queries on the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2118 (2013)

In response to media queries on the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2118 (2013), the MFA Spokesman said:

“Singapore welcomes the unanimous adoption by the United Nations Security Council of Resolution 2118 (2013) on the elimination of chemical weapons in Syria. We support the decision by the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to establish special procedures for the expeditious destruction of Syria's chemical weapons programme and stringent verification. Being a small island state, Singapore strongly condemns the use of chemical weapons under any circumstances, which constitutes a violation of international law and a threat to international peace and security. Singapore urges the Syrian Government to comply with its obligations under the Resolution and to cooperate fully with the UN and OPCW to ensure the verification, non-proliferation, and destruction of its chemical weapons as soon as possible.

We remain deeply concerned by the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria. In this regard, we hope that the adoption of the UNSC Resolution 2118 will facilitate the urgent convening of the Geneva II conference in order to find a political solution to end the violence and the longstanding conflict in Syria.”
