MFA Press Statement: Visit by Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, for the Post Ministerial Conferences and the 19th ASEAN Regional Forum, 10 to 13 July 2012

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam attended the 2nd East Asia Summit (EAS) Foreign Ministers Meeting and 19th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on 12 July 2012. The ASEAN Foreign Ministers and their counterparts from the EAS (Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation and the United States) discussed and reviewed key regional developments and progress on their partnership to realise ASEAN Community-Building goals. The EAS Foreign Ministers reaffirmed their support for the six priority areas of functional cooperation, including the implementation of the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity (MPAC). The ARF Ministers paid a courtesy call upon Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and had a fruitful discussion and exchange of views on key regional developments and reaffirmed the central role of ASEAN in the regional architecture. The ARF Minister welcomed the positive developments in Myanmar and conducted in-depth discussions on developments in the South China Sea and the Korean Peninsula.

Minister Shanmugam returns to Singapore tomorrow.
