Ministry of Foreign Affairs Press Statement on Terrorist Attacks in New York and Washington (12 Sep@1700 hrs)

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Operations Centre in Singapore, the Singapore Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York and the Singapore Embassy in Washington D.C. will continue 24-hour operations.

As of 1700 hrs, 278 and 173 Singaporeans have been contacted by our Mission in New York and Embassy in Washington respectively. 334 Singaporeans have contacted the Ministry to register their relatives and friends. This information has been sent to both our missions in the US.

As of 1700 hrs, 4 Singaporeans, who were believed to have been in the vicinity of the World Trade Centre in New York, are still unaccounted for. Given the catastrophic nature of the tragedy, it will take some time before the number and identity of casualties can be determined. Our Mission in New York and Embassy in Washington are in contact with the families and are making every effort to ascertain the whereabouts of these four Singaporeans.
