Former senior minister S. Jayakumar meeting former British prime minister John Major after both of them were conferred the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun by the Emperor of Japan at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo yesterday. They were among 10 distinguished recipients of the award.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Professor Jayakumar has known Mr Major since his days as foreign minister. The award was presented to Prof Jayakumar 'in recognition of his significant contributions' towards strengthening bilateral ties between Japan and Singapore, according to a statement by the Japanese Embassy in Singapore.
